Troubleshooting Problems with Your Garage Door

Is your garage door noisy when it opens or closes? Or do you have a garage door remote that all of sudden stopped working? These are common problems that we all, as homeowners, encounter every once in a while. The Door People are here to help you troubleshoot your garage door problems. Please keep in mind that a malfunctioning garage door or overhead door can be dangerous. Our trained garage door service technicians are available to repair your garage door and help you with your issue. Here are some common garage door problems that may help you determine what is going on:

ISSUE WHAT TO DO
Operator does NOT run from wall control. •   Check power source.

–   Plug a lamp into the outlet used for power head. If the lamp works, the power source is OK.

–   If not, check fuse or circuit breaker.

•   If power is OK.

–   Check connections at power head terminals.

–   Check connections at wall control.

•   Check for broken or cut wires. Staples can cut insulation and short wires, repair or replace.

•   Check vacation lock on the wall console to make sure it is unlocked.

Door operator starts for no reason. •   Was a remote control lost or stolen? Erase all remote control codes from receiver memory and reprogram.

•   Button stuck on wall control or remote.

•   Check CLOSE limit switch setting.

•   Wires shorted. Staples can cut insulation and short wires, repair or replace.

Door starts down, then STOPS before it’s closed. •   Check CONTACT REVERSE.

•   Check garage door for binding.

•   Wires shorted. Staples can cut insulation and short wires, repair or replace.

Door starts down, then STOPS and goes back up. •   If a NEW installation, check Door Arm position.

•   Check Safety Beam System for beam obstruction or misalignment of lenses.

•   Check if Safety Beam Red LED is flashing.

•   Check “CLOSE FORCE” adjustment.

•   Check garage door for binding.

Door will only run closed. •   Check “OPEN FORCE” adjustment.

•   Check door condition and door spring.

•   DANGER: If you suspect a problem with the garage door hardware or springs, contact Overhead Door Company.

Door will only run open. •   Check “CLOSE FORCE” adjustment.
Door starts up, but STOPS before it’s completely open. •   Be sure door, operator, and springs are in good repair, properly lubricated and balanced.

•   Check “OPEN” limit setting.

•   Check “OPEN FORCE” adjustment.

•   DANGER: If you suspect a problem with the garage door hardware or springs, contact Overhead Door Company.

Operator runs, but door does NOT move. •   Make sure carriage is engaged to carriage slide.

–   Place carriage lever in lock position.

•   Check to make sure chain is not broken or OFF its track.

•   Check “FORCE ADJUSTMENT.” Door operator will NOT run more than 30 seconds each way if door does not move.

Remote control has less than 25 feet operating range or no operation. •   Relocate remote control inside car and/or point remote control at garage door.

•   Replace battery.

•   Reposition door operator antenna.

•   Red LED blinks while button is being pushed or LED does not come on – battery is low, replace battery.

Operator works from wall control, but NOT from remote control. •   Check to make sure the safety beam system, located on the lower part of the track, is facing each other, and nothing is in front of the lens. Also wipe them with a clean soft dry cloth.

•   Program remote control into operator.

•   Replace remote control battery with good one.

Noisy operation •   Be sure all fasteners are tight.

•   Be sure door and operator are in good repair, properly lubricated and balanced.

Safety beam system malfunction •   If an operational problem exists, and operator will not run closed, the operator can be forced to close as follows.

–   Hold the wall control button down until door is completely closed.

–   Check safety beam system alignment.

–   Check to make sure nothing is in front of the safety beam system.

–   Take a soft dry clean cloth and wipe off the lens of the safety beam system.

–   Replace safety beam system sensors.

–   Call for repair service at Overhead Door Company.

Operator will not run with remote or wall button and there are no lights on the wall console or photo eyes. •   Check to see if the vacation lock on the wall console is unlocked.

•   Check to make sure there is electricity to the operator.
